Is Car Insurance Compulsory in Spain?

Yes. Vehicles with their normal base in Spain are subject to Spain's compulsory motor-insurance requirements.

The owner must maintain compulsory liability insurance covering responsibility for damage and injury caused to third parties.

Spanish compulsory motor insurance currently provides statutory liability limits for personal injury and property damage. These limits are established by Spanish legislation and may be updated over time.

Compulsory third-party insurance should not be confused with comprehensive insurance. The compulsory element principally protects third parties rather than providing comprehensive protection against damage to your own vehicle.

If you want protection for risks such as theft, fire, glass damage or accidental damage to your own vehicle, you should consider the additional cover available under the policy.

What Happens If You Drive Without Insurance in Spain?

Driving or keeping a vehicle that is required to be insured without the necessary compulsory insurance can have serious consequences.

Spanish legislation provides for:

  • Prohibition on circulating with an uninsured vehicle
  • Immobilization or impounding of the vehicle in applicable circumstances
  • Financial penalties ranging from €601 to €3,005, depending on factors including whether the vehicle was being driven, the type of vehicle, how long it had been uninsured and whether there have been repeated infringements

More importantly, driving without appropriate insurance can leave the owner or driver exposed to potentially substantial financial consequences following an accident.

Keeping your insurance valid is therefore essential.

What Types of Car Insurance Are Available in Spain?

The terminology varies between insurers, but Spanish motor insurance generally falls into three broad categories.

Third-Party Insurance — Seguro a Terceros

Third-party insurance provides the compulsory liability protection required by law.

It is designed to cover your liability for injury or damage caused to other people and their property, subject to the applicable policy and statutory provisions.

It generally does not cover accidental damage to your own vehicle.

Third-party insurance may therefore be considered by owners of older or relatively low-value vehicles.

Extended Third-Party Cover — Terceros Ampliado

Many Spanish insurers offer enhanced third-party policies.

Depending on the insurer and product, additional cover may include:

  • Fire
  • Theft
  • Windscreen and glass damage
  • Roadside assistance
  • Legal assistance

There is no single standard definition of terceros ampliado, so check exactly what a particular policy includes.

Comprehensive Insurance — Seguro a Todo Riesgo

Comprehensive insurance provides broader protection and may cover accidental damage to your own vehicle as well as third-party liability.

Depending on the policy, comprehensive insurance can also include protection against:

  • Theft
  • Fire
  • Vandalism
  • Glass damage
  • Certain weather-related damage
  • Roadside assistance

Comprehensive insurance may be offered with an excess (franquicia) or without one.

The appropriate option depends on factors including your vehicle's age and value, your circumstances and how much financial risk you are comfortable retaining yourself.

How Much Does Car Insurance Cost in Spain for Expats?

There is no reliable single price for expat car insurance in Spain.

Premiums depend on the insurer and individual risk profile.

Factors can include:

  • Driver age
  • Driving experience
  • Claims history
  • Vehicle make and model
  • Engine characteristics
  • Vehicle age and value
  • Where the vehicle is normally kept
  • How it is used
  • Drivers covered by the policy
  • Level of cover selected
  • Policy excess
  • Optional benefits

For this reason, headline prices found online aren't necessarily representative of what you will pay.

The most useful comparison is a quotation based on your own vehicle, driving history and circumstances.

Car Insurance in Spain for British Expats

British residents often encounter additional questions when arranging insurance in Spain.

These can include:

  • Whether a UK driving licence is still valid
  • Transferring previous claims history
  • Bringing a UK-registered vehicle to Spain
  • Spanish vehicle registration
  • ITV requirements
  • Understanding Spanish policy terminology
  • European travel and roadside assistance

These issues should be considered separately. Having insurance does not necessarily mean that every other legal requirement relating to the vehicle, registration or driver's licence has been satisfied.

Likewise, a vehicle-registration issue should not be confused with whether an insurance policy itself remains contractually valid.

Abbeygate's English-speaking team can help explain the insurance side of the process.

Driving in Spain With a UK Licence

The rules differ depending on whether you're visiting Spain or have become resident.

British nationals who become resident in Spain can currently drive using a valid UK or Gibraltar licence for up to six months from obtaining Spanish residence.

To continue driving after that period, holders of exchangeable UK or Gibraltar licences need to exchange them for a Spanish licence.

Under the current UK-Spain arrangements, eligible UK and Gibraltar licence holders can exchange their licence without taking a Spanish theory or practical driving test.

You should arrange the exchange before the six-month period expires.

Different rules apply to licences issued in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

UK-Registered Cars in Spain

This is an area where it's particularly important to distinguish between insurance and vehicle-registration requirements.

A UK insurance policy does not automatically become invalid simply because the vehicle enters Spain.

UK motor insurance provides at least the minimum third-party insurance required when driving in EU countries, including Spain, while the policy remains valid. However, the duration and extent of additional overseas cover — such as theft or accidental damage — depends on the individual UK policy.

That does not mean a Spanish resident can indefinitely operate a UK-registered vehicle in Spain.

Vehicles brought permanently to Spain can become subject to Spanish customs, tax, ITV and registration requirements.

Since the UK is outside the EU, bringing a UK vehicle permanently into Spain can involve import procedures as well as Spanish registration.

The precise position depends on the owner's residency, how the vehicle entered Spain, when it began being used here and whether any relocation-related exemptions apply.

Do not rely on a general “30-day rule” without checking your individual circumstances. Spanish tax rules contain 30-day and, in certain qualifying changes of residence, 60-day provisions, while customs and registration requirements can involve additional conditions.

Can You Drive a UK-Registered Car While It Is Being Registered in Spain?

Imported vehicles can require customs procedures, an ITV inspection, tax formalities and registration with the DGT.

DGT provides a temporary registration system for vehicles awaiting permanent Spanish registration.

Temporary green plates can allow a vehicle to be driven while the registration process is completed, provided the necessary requirements are satisfied and the vehicle is insured.

If you are importing a UK vehicle, check the registration and insurance position before driving it rather than assuming your existing arrangements remain appropriate throughout the process.

The V16 Emergency Beacon: What Expats Need to Know in 2026

From 1 January 2026, Spain changed the way vehicles registered in Spain signal a breakdown or immobilisation.

For vehicles subject to the Spanish requirement, the connected, DGT-approved V16 emergency beacon replaces warning triangles as the recognised method of signalling an immobilised vehicle.

The device should be kept accessible inside the vehicle and, when required, can be placed on the vehicle without the driver having to walk into the road to position warning triangles.

What About UK-Registered Cars?

This is an important distinction.

Vehicles registered in other countries and travelling in Spain in international circulation may continue to use warning triangles.

Therefore, the statement that every foreign-registered vehicle in Spain must carry a connected V16 beacon is incorrect.

If your vehicle has been registered in Spain, however, you should make sure that any V16 device you purchase is a connected model approved for the Spanish system.

Transferring Your UK No-Claims History to Spain

If you've built up a claims-free driving history in the UK, don't assume it has no value when moving to Spain.

Some insurers may take previous overseas claims history into account when assessing a quotation.

Acceptance criteria vary by insurer.

You may be asked to provide evidence from your previous insurer confirming information such as:

  • Your insurance history
  • The period you were insured
  • Claims made during that period
  • Your previous no-claims entitlement or claims-free years

Whether that history results in a discount, and how the insurer calculates it, depends on its underwriting rules.

For that reason, we would avoid generic claims that every insurer accepts a certain number of years or that a particular percentage discount is guaranteed.

What Documents Do You Need for Car Insurance in Spain?

Requirements vary between insurers, but you may be asked for information or documentation including:

  • Passport or identity document
  • NIE/TIE details where applicable
  • Valid driving licence
  • Spanish address
  • Vehicle registration details
  • Permiso de Circulación for a Spanish-registered vehicle
  • Ficha Técnica / ITV documentation
  • Previous insurance details
  • Evidence of claims history where relevant

Imported or foreign-registered vehicles can require different documentation.

If you aren't sure what is needed, Abbeygate can tell you which documents are required for the insurer and vehicle concerned.

Roadside Assistance in Spain

Roadside assistance can be particularly valuable when driving in Spain or travelling elsewhere in Europe.

Depending on the policy, assistance may include:

  • Roadside help
  • Towing
  • Vehicle recovery
  • Passenger assistance
  • Onward travel
  • Replacement transport in specified circumstances

Don't assume every policy provides the same benefits.

Check geographical limits, vehicle-age restrictions, kilometer limits, exclusions and whether assistance applies from your home address.

Do You Need a Green Card to Drive From Spain to the UK?

A Green Card is an internationally recognised document demonstrating motor-insurance cover.

UK motorists with valid UK insurance do not currently need a Green Card simply to drive in Spain or other EU countries.

Requirements can differ when travelling into countries outside the EU/EEA and associated arrangements.

If you intend to drive across several countries, check the requirements for every country on your route and confirm the geographical limits of your insurance before departure.

Can Someone Else Drive Your Car in Spain?

Do not assume that because a vehicle is insured, anybody can drive it.

Spanish motor insurance is attached to an insured vehicle, but individual policies can contain conditions relating to:

  • Declared drivers
  • Driver age
  • Driving experience
  • Licence status
  • Occasional drivers
  • Young or newly qualified drivers

If another person regularly drives your car, tell your insurer or broker and check the policy conditions.

This is especially important where a younger or inexperienced driver uses the vehicle.

Can You Leave a Car Uninsured While You're Away From Spain?

Owners should not simply cancel compulsory insurance because a vehicle will be parked for several months.

Spanish law requires owners of vehicles with their normal base in Spain that fall within the compulsory-insurance regime to maintain the required insurance.

If you own a holiday home and leave a vehicle in Spain while spending part of the year elsewhere, discuss the situation with your insurer rather than cancelling the policy without checking the legal and contractual consequences.

Changing Car Insurance Companies in Spain

Spanish insurance policies commonly renew automatically.

If you, as the policyholder, want to oppose renewal, Spanish Insurance Contract Law provides for written notice to the insurer at least one month before the end of the current insurance period.

The insurer has a different notice period: at least two months where it wishes to oppose renewal. It must also give at least two months' notice of contractual changes for the next period.

Check your policy documentation and don't leave cancellation until renewal day.

Most importantly, ensure replacement insurance is in force when required so that you don't inadvertently create a gap in compulsory cover.

What Should You Look for in Spanish Car Insurance?

Price matters, but it shouldn't be the only consideration.

When comparing policies, consider:

  • Third-party liability protection
  • Damage to your own vehicle
  • Fire and theft
  • Windscreen and glass cover
  • Policy excess
  • Roadside assistance
  • European geographical cover
  • Legal assistance
  • Replacement vehicle provisions
  • Driver restrictions
  • Total-loss valuation
  • Claims service
  • Exclusions

A cheaper premium can be poor value if the cover you actually need has been removed or restricted.

The right policy is the one that provides appropriate protection for your circumstances at a price you're comfortable paying.

Frequently Asked Questions About Car Insurance in Spain for Expats

Is car insurance compulsory in Spain?

Yes. Vehicles subject to Spain's compulsory motor-insurance regime must maintain the required third-party liability insurance.

Can I use UK car insurance in Spain?

A valid UK motor policy provides at least minimum third-party cover when driving in EU countries, including Spain. The duration and extent of additional overseas cover depends on your individual policy. Moving permanently to Spain can also trigger separate Spanish vehicle-registration, customs and tax requirements.

Does my UK insurance automatically become invalid when I become resident in Spain?

No blanket rule should be stated in those terms. Your insurer's policy conditions determine its contractual cover, while Spanish residency can separately affect whether a foreign-registered vehicle needs to be imported and registered in Spain. Check both issues.

How long can a Spanish resident keep a UK-plated car in Spain?

People moving permanently to Spain should not rely on a simple universal number of days. Spanish tax rules contain deadlines associated with first use and qualifying transfers of residence, while imported vehicles are also subject to customs and DGT registration requirements. Check your circumstances with the relevant authorities or an appropriate specialist.

Can I transfer my UK no-claims bonus to Spanish insurance?

Some insurers may recognise overseas claims history, subject to their underwriting rules and acceptable evidence. Abbeygate can explain the requirements of insurers available to you.

Can I drive in Spain with my UK driving licence after becoming resident?

A valid UK or Gibraltar licence is currently recognised for driving for six months from obtaining Spanish residence. Eligible UK and Gibraltar licence holders can exchange their licence for a Spanish one without taking a theory or practical test.

Do UK-plated cars need a V16 beacon in Spain?

Foreign-registered vehicles travelling in Spain in international circulation may continue to use warning triangles. The connected V16 requirement applying from 1 January 2026 should therefore not be described as applying automatically to every foreign-registered vehicle visiting Spain.

Do I need a Green Card to drive in Spain with UK insurance?

Not currently. UK motorists do not need a Green Card simply to drive in EU countries, including Spain, although valid motor insurance remains compulsory.

How much does expat car insurance cost in Spain?

There is no reliable universal price. Premiums depend on the driver, vehicle, claims history, location, cover selected and the insurer's underwriting criteria. An individual quotation provides a more meaningful answer.

How much notice do I need to cancel my Spanish car insurance at renewal?

Under Spanish Insurance Contract Law, a policyholder who wishes to oppose renewal should give the insurer written notice at least one month before the end of the current insurance period.
